Jewellery
Jewellery is a form of decoration that is worn on the body. It can be worn on the clothes or attached to the body. Flowers and other objects that are often used as ornaments are not considered jewellery in the western sense. Jewellery can be made from many materials, including silver, gold, and platinum.
Metals are often joined with heat to create a beautiful piece of jewellery. The most common method is gas-torch welding, but laser-welding and TIG welding are also becoming increasingly popular in jewelry studios. Some jewellers choose to cast their own pieces, while others prefer to commission their work to a casting company.
The history of jewellers goes back as far as ancient times. Ancient jewelry was made from gold and silver and decorated with various types of gemstones. Originally, almost all gems were mounted on a metal base. This was especially important for pieces with important stones. During this time, small white gold or platinum rings were fitted against the back of the stone to hold it in place.
Jewellers must be knowledgeable and passionate about their work. The art of setting gemstones in metal was once considered separate from that of making jewellery, but today, many jewellers train in this area. A jeweller must be able to fit and polish gemstones in metal. Traditionally, jewellers have hired external setters to complete this task, but this has changed in recent years.
